Running a Marathon on the Gold Coast

Amateur runners participating in the upcoming Gold Coast Airport Marathon can look forward to a challenging yet very fulfilling race. The preparations may be tedious for novice runners, but the rewards outweigh the struggles and difficulties of everyday training. We at the Tugun holiday accommodation at Pelican Sands Beach Resort understands the gruelling preparations that marathon runners go through that is why we have gathered a number of helpful suggestions that can be useful especially for novice runners.

  • Don’t change your routines. As much as possible, marathon athletes should not change your routines including your diet and comfy running shoes.
  • Prepare your running apparels. Try to prepare everything that you need to wear at the marathon such as your shoes, socks and running shirt.
  • Get enough rest. Get a good night’s sleep at least two days before the race so you can conserve your energy.
  • No training one day prior to race. Try to rest your feet and legs and avoid getting injuries before the marathon by taking a much needed day off from training.
  • Loading up on food and water. Load up on carbs by eating starchy foods two days before the race. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated but do not drink too much.
  • Protect your skin at all times. Use anti-chafe/ anti-friction balms to protect your skin. Also try to use sunscreen before going out.
  • Check the weather forecast. Before going out to the race, make sure that you check out. If its going to be rainy or cold, wear outer layers to keep warm and dry.
  • Always be ready with inconstant weather conditions. If the weather is hot, try to slow down a bit and take in more fluids. Avoid slippery areas when it’s rainy, and if it’s windy, try to avoid meeting head wind.
  • Know the right pace. Going too fast during the early stages of the race might burn you out quickly and might even cause leg cramps.
  • Race to the finish. As an amateur runner, your main goal is to finish the race. Time goals are just secondary. Stay safe while running the race.
